This passage could more eloquently be edited as follows: "This paper explores the problem of Horatio in Shakespeare's Hamlet. For example, if your first sentence were a text statement and your second sentence were a thesis statement, it would sound goofy to say: "In this paper, I explore the problem of Horatio in Shakespeare's Hamlet, especially the fact that Horatio loves to tell stories. Show, don’t tell, but do try to flag.īe careful not to over-flag your introductory material, which can make your paper sound mechanical. It would be better to say something like (for occasion), “The problem with is that … ,” or (for methodology), “This essay looks at from the perspective of … ,“ or (for assertions and analyses) to give the details specific to your ideas. Likewise, it would be awkward to read, “My occasion for this essay is … ,” or “My methodology is … ,” or “I assert that … ,” or “My analysis of this evidence is that … ”. For example, it would be awkward for a paper to say something like, “My text is … ,” a flag that could be better stated as, “In this paper, I examine … ”. ![]() Today and every day, we remember that the great and defining truth about our Nation and our people is that there is nothing beyond our capacity - we do not break, we never give in, and we never back down. And from the darkness of World War II came the light of liberty and the establishment of a rules-based international order. Fierce battles with the Axis powers gave way to diplomatic partnerships with strong allies. From the death and destruction at Pearl Harbor came victory over the forces of fascism. This commemoration is also a solemn reminder that our country is capable of achieving great triumphs coming out of dark moments. Today, we carry forward their spirit of unity and their enduring resolve to protect the United States against those who seek to do us harm. In the wake of tragedy, these brave women and men - the Greatest Generation - answered the call to defend freedom, justice, and democracy across the Pacific, throughout Europe, and around the globe. We reflect on the resilience of America’s Armed Forces, who withstood the attack and built the most capable fighting force the world has ever known. On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we honor the memories of the 2,403 service members and civilians whose lives were cut short on that tragic December morning. ![]()
However, Yakuza 2's plot has the benefit of being one of the more exciting and memorable of the series-there's an unforgettably gruff and showy antagonist in Ryuji Goda, the "Dragon of Kansai" that stands in staunch opposition to Kiryu's "Dragon of Dojima" moniker, a number of intriguing twists as a multinational blood feud is uncovered, some heavy-set themes about the value of loyalty and being shaped by your past, as well as some of the series' absurdly excellent moments, like punching a lunging tiger in the face. In typical series fashion, the majority of the story is told through highly charged, emotional cutscenes that lean heavily on the beats of Japanese drama, and they are as slow-paced as they are impressive to look at. It's here where you can see the strong foundations for the multi-protagonist approach that the series would later take, and in general, Kiwami 2's script is tweaked slightly to be a little more self-reflective from the lens of a present-day retrospective. Supporting them are the familiar Makoto Date and his hardened former mentor, Jiro Kawara, who all play interesting roles with great performances. Kiryu teams up with ace Osakan detective Kaoru Sayama for the majority of the game, who is a strong, likable character-their odd-couple pairing and growing relationship are some of the things that make Yakuza 2 so exceptional. Their demeanor contrasts greatly to Tokyo natives, and this plays into the tensions between the major crime organizations in the Kansai and Kanto regions, respectively. This not only added variety and scope to its geography and narrative, but memorable personalities with its Osakan characters. ![]() The original Yakuza 2 is more than just a personal favorite it's where the series became more ambitious in terms of its world and narrative by introducing an additional location for the first time, the iconic Osakan strip of Dotonbori (stylised as "Sotenbori"), in addition to Kabukicho (stylised as "Kamurocho") in Tokyo. And it's fortunate things worked out this way, because Yakuza Kiwami 2 combines the best parts of both timelines, as we simultaneously revisit the point in time where the series hit its stride, while being able to enjoy the superior benefits of a seamless world and fluid combat system afforded by the latest engine. ![]() Yakuza 6 was a great finale to a saga that began in 2006, but now, the series has taken another 10-year leap backward in terms of narrative chronology but has taken its latest technology with it. ![]() The next title that followed, however, was Yakuza 6, which bid farewell to mainstay protagonist Kazuma Kiryu while debuting the brand new "Dragon" game engine. The western release of prequel Yakuza 0 in 2017 was a dazzling gateway for a new wave of players and flowed naturally into a remake of the very first game later that year. The Yakuza series sits at a unique place in 2018, juggling two different points in the series timeline. ![]() The most fondly beloved games of this period came from the British development house Climax Studios, who were responsible for the development of PSP/PS2 title Silent Hill: Origins in 2007, and PSP/PS2/Wii title Shattered Memories in 2009. Aside from the occasional hit, it was mostly downhill from there. For the first four games, they were all developed in-house by Konami’s Team Silent, but Konami began licensing the brand out to other development houses in the West to do something with the series. It’s at this point, however, where the Silent Hill series starts to move in completely new directions - and not entirely for the better either. Silent Hill 4 hit an average of 76 on Metacritic, with reviewers praising the game’s creepy visuals and story, but admonishing the game for some wonky targeting despite focusing more on combat than ever. So, you know, nothing like it.Īs far as the game being a departure from the traditional Silent Hill tropes, SH4: The Room was a bold attempt at keeping the franchise fresh, but unfortunately it didn’t really translate well in terms of reviews. It’s like Being John Malkovich, if it was a horror game. There’s also a weird hole in the bathroom that may or may not be a portal to other dimensions. Silent Hill 4: The Room, which launched on PS2, Xbox and PC in 2004, deviated from the expected Silent Hill tropes by not taking place in the town, instead focusing on an apartment in another city that has some supernatural connection to the psyche of a dead serial killer. ![]() Unfortunately, it’s here where the legacy begins to waver somewhat, but not as quickly as you’d think. The follow-up games, Silent Hill 2 and 3, went on to achieve an equal to greater level of success that the first entry, with 2001’s SH2 earning an 89 on Metacritic, going on to be considered as the best entry in the series, while Silent Hill 3 in 2003 would earn an 85, and sold 300,000 copies within a few months of release. The first game in the series launched in 1999, receiving a 86 on Metacritic and selling over two million copies worldwide, which is incredibly impressive for the gaming industry over 20 years ago. In the early going, it felt like Silent Hill was on top of the world. ![]() He would leave Konami in 2010, but still found his way back to horror by working on Bloober Team’s The Medium. Akira volunteered himself to work on the original Silent Hill’s soundtrack as a composer, before becoming the series’ sound design lead, working on Silent Hill for a decade. One other aspect of the franchise which became synonymous with Silent Hill was the incredible score and sound design by Akira Yamoaka, a then long-time Konami employee responsible for the score on the likes of Contra: Hard Corps, Snatcher and Gradius Deluxe Pack. That inspiration would prove to be a lifesaver for the Silent Hill series, as the developers used heavy fog as a way to mask the PS1’s shortcomings regarding draw distance. The franchise was inspired by a lot of sources, one of the most notable being The Mist, the Stephen King novel about monsters descending on a small town while shrouded in heavy mist. Naturally, the team opted for a supernatural horror game set in a sleepy little American town, which would become the titular Silent Hill. Development of the first game started in September 1996, with the intention to create a game that would be successful in the West. Silent Hill’s history begins within Konami. Today, finally, we’re asking the question: will we ever see a new Silent Hill game? Unfortunately, the series has had an incredibly rocky history over the past couple of years, and the future of Silent Hill has been up in the air ever since. However, with Halloween practically around the corner, the timing is right to finally tackle the big one: Silent Hill.įor a lot of people, Silent Hill is considered one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time, and it holds a special place in the hearts of many for being a huge part of their formative years. Tackling a series like The Darkness isn’t so bad when there’s only two games, but there’s plenty of meat on these bones. Since we started this little retrospective series of ours, there’s one franchise that’s been more daunting than the rest, just because there’s so much to cover. ![]() He probably had a certain glow about him, too, because he was young, just 25, and so the sky could still seem to be the limit. 290 batting average) and carried the reputation for being a stellar defensive catcher (as attested to on the back of this card: “Biff once threw out 11 consecutive runners attempting to steal”). ![]() He’d had a strong 1977 campaign (highlighted by his. ![]() It was part of the one good month for the 1978 Atlanta Braves, both their sole winning month of the season and the month that saw them send three players to the All-Star game: their star slugger, Jeff Burroughs, their ace, Phil Niekro, and Biff Pocoroba. Biff Pocoroba, in name and in this card in particular, is a way for me to enter the moment-as holy a moment as I can imagine-of a major league game.īiff Pocoroba’s name must have been announced during the introductions of players before the 1978 All-Star Game. He is about to pull that mask on and go to work, and the photo freezing him in the moment just before he does so puts us right there, anticipating the way the mask would feel if we were to pull it onto our own face and look out at the whole field in front of us. It has something to do with Biff Pocoroba’s rugged looks, and his tough ready-for-action squint, and his beaten-up turned-around cap and thin, snug chest protector, and the way his chunky mitt catches the sun, but the intimate sensual pull of the card is centered most on the way Biff Pocoroba is tugging upward, almost gently, on the straps of his mask. But from this point on I may associate him with this 1978 card, which subtly draws the viewer into the charged moment of a big league game as well as any card I’ve seen. ![]() I never really connected the name Biff Pocoroba with anything in particular beyond the vague recollection that Biff Pocoroba was a Brave, and that he was, like Bruce Bochte with Bruce Bochy, Garry Maddox with Gary Matthews, and John Montefusco with John D’Acquisto, paired up forever in my mind with Bob Apodaca. Long story short, humankind then proceeded to suffer and sin and beget and grieve and murder and roam, all along using and creating and developing the names of the world, relentlessly, as if the cause of the first separation from pure holiness could be a way-maybe through commandments, maybe through psalms, maybe through prayers-to somehow return to holiness. A few lines later in the familiar story quoted above, this mortal separation really gets cooking, and the first guy gets the heave ho from Eden, his intimate connection to the holy world severed. If I grow to be an old man, I’m sure the words Biff Pocoroba will continue bubbling up into my consciousness long after most other things of the darkening world have shucked off their names.Īccording to one particularly influential source, God created everything, but he let the first human handle the creation of words: “So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.” (Genesis 3:19) This naming separated that first human from everything else in creation, the namer from the named, and also separated the first human from infinity, namelessless, eternity, God. I’m in my forties, and here I am again, thinking about Biff Pocoroba. I was in my thirties, proofreading in my cubicle, and the name would come into my head: Biff Pocoroba. I was in my twenties slouching behind the counter at the liquor store where I worked and the name would come into my head: Biff Pocoroba. I was a teenager high on bong hits and throwing a Frisbee and the name would come into my head: Biff Pocoroba. It was a particularly satisfying and even addictive name to say, so I said it a lot, and it ended up traveling with me through life, far beyond the years when I collected cards. But among all these names, Biff Pocoroba ruled. I said every name out loud or whispered it or mouthed it, trying it out, feeling its weight on my tongue. Before we get to the good stuff, let me explain that Mr. ![]() Former New York Times reviewer David Pogue said "iMovie ‘08 is an utter bafflement. IMovie 08 was criticized due to its drastic abandonment of some iMovie HD 6 features. iMovie '08 also had the ability to export movies to the YouTube video sharing website. It also supported non-tape-based HD video, such as AVCHD and footage from DVD and HDD camcorders. It included more exportation formats, including iPhone-sized video. iMovie 08 also had the ability to add more than two layers of background sound, including multiple music, narration and sounds previous versions could play multiple tracks but could display only two extra audio tracks. A new feature called "skimming" for quickly previewing video in the library at a user controlled speed was added, and so was a feature that allows the user to highlight parts of video clips just like highlighting text. Motion JPEG-encoded AVI files were recognized, and were the most common format used by digital cameras. Some of the formats that iMovie '08 was able to import will not be recognized when they are added to an iPhoto library. iPhoto uses the QuickTime library and can create thumbnails for all QuickTime supported formats, but most of these cannot be used by iMovie '08. ![]() This was limited, however, by an undocumented restriction on supported codecs. It had much better HD output, and more formats to convert to. iMovie '08 was a complete redesign and rewrite of iMovie. IMovie '08 (version 7.0) was released in August 2007 as a part of the iLife '08 suite. It also introduced real-time titling, enhanced audio tools and effects, the ability to have multiple projects open at once, video podcasts and blogs (using integration with iWeb), and a refined look based on iTunes 5 and 6. iMovie HD 6 also added real-time effects, which took advantage of the computer's graphic processing unit to perform some effects without rendering. Each theme included full-motion graphic bumpers and transitions. Themes allow the user to drop movie clips or photos into professionally designed backdrops. iMovie HD 6 was designed for ease of use, and included new themes. It was integrated with iPhoto, iTunes, iDVD, GarageBand and iWeb. However, this option was removed after iLife '09 was released. IMovie 6 was released in January 2006 as part of the iLife '06 suite, and was also originally optionally included with iLife '08 as a substitution for iMovie '08 (due to the new version's incompatibility with older Power PC Macintosh computers). iMovie transcodes HD video upon import using this codec and stores it in the QuickTime file format. To facilitate this, iMovie includes the Apple Intermediate Codec on the system as a QuickTime component. Later versions added support for footage from AVCHD camcorders, and H.264-compressed video from MPEG-4 or QuickTime File Format files (.mov), as generated by a number of digital photo cameras with HD video recording feature. It gained the "Magic iMovie" feature, which attempted to automate the whole process of video editing, by allowing a common transition to be added between scenes, a music track to be synchronised with the video and a DVD to be created with the accompanying iDVD software. iMovie HD 5 imported MJPEG files as DV by default, which introduces noise MJPEG files are cryptically lumped with "iSight" files in this version. It gained features to integrate it with the rest of the iLife suite, with toolbox buttons allowing the importing of images from iPhoto, music from iTunes and the setting of chapter markers ready for exporting to iDVD. History Ī blank movie project in iMovie HD, included with iLife '05īeginning with version 5, iMovie was renamed to iMovie HD, to highlight its new support for HDV (720p and 1080i) camcorders. IMovie is pre-installed on all new Macs, iPhones, and iPads, and is available for free on the App Store. The iOS version of iMovie came out in 2010. iMovie '08 was a complete rewrite, and lacked many of the features of previous versions, which returned in iMovie '09 and iMovie '11. With version 3, iMovie became part of Apple's now-defunct iLife suite, alongside other multimedia apps. IMovie was originally released in 1999 for Mac OS 8, and bundled with the iMac DV. iMovie's professional equivalent is Apple's Final Cut Pro X.
